Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Black-Slip Bird Decoration, Stamped "EDMANDS & CO.," Charlestown, MA, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with spotted body and ringed neck, perched on a scrolled branch. Decoration is composed of a rare blackish slip composed of cobalt and possibly Albany slip. Staining to surface. A tiny nick and 1 1/2" horizontal crack in one handle. Two short horizontal cracks in opposite handle. Two chips to interior of rim. H 14 3/4".
