Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed design of flowers, leaves, scrolled vines, and dotted trails, emanating from an open-handled basket. Rare orientation of the basket's handle in the front of the basket, as opposed to the sides. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Small flakes to one handle. A 7" Y-shaped line to reverse. A small forked-shaped line at base on side of crock, extending 7" across underside. A faint 6" Y-shaped line to right side of crock's front. A shallow 7/8" chip to interior of rim. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to rim on reverse. Light staining throughout. H 13 1/8".
