Rare Tanware Canning Jar, Western PA or WV origin, circa 1885, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flared collar, the exterior coated in reddish Albany slip and decorated with a brushed tan-slip foliate design composed of the jar's base clay. Interior covered in a dark-brown Albany slip glaze. Rare form and glaze treatment. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an area of in-the-firing wear to interior of rim. H 10 1/2".
