Scarce Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "THOMAS D HARDEN / PALATINE. W. VA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged Federal eagle with shield and banner, surrounded by Thomas D. Harden maker's stenciling. Stenciled "4" with flourishes at shoulder. Excellent condition with some small areas of fry to cobalt, a minor X-shaped ping at base on front, and some light surface wear. H 14 1/2".
