Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Advertising for "PHILADELPHIA TEA HOUSE / WHEELING , W. VA.," Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with freehand cobalt stripes and the elaborate stenciled advertising: "PHILADELPHIA TEA HOUSE / CHRIS BEHRENS / PROPRIETOR / AND DEALER IN / GROCERIES, FLOUR. COUNTRY PRODUCE / & C. / 3601 JACOB AND 36 & 38 THIRTY SIXTH / STS., WHEELING, W. VA.". An unusually elaborate example of West Virginia advertising stoneware. A 4" vertical line at base on left side of jar, continuing onto base a few inches and then 2 1/2" up reverse of jar. An additional 2 1/2" vertical line at base on reverse. A faint diagonal 2" surface line on front, not visible on interior. A small glazed-over rim chip. Small traces of old green paint to surface. H 9 7/8".
