Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON PA," circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with worm in its beak, standing atop a well-detailed stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Spots of fry to cobalt. Some surface wear. Significant restoration to left side and reverse of crock, with restoration paint peeling. Restoration extends several inches onto underside. Some restoration paint is also visible on the tops of the handles. A few hairlines to underside. Tight unrestored lines to front. A small chip to interior of rim. A restored 1 1/4" chip to interior of rim. H 13 1/4".
