Two One-Gallon Stoneware Jars with Rare Northeastern Maker's Marks, second quarter 19th century, one of ovoid, handled form with large brushed tulip motif, impressed on the reverse, "W. SMITH / GREENWICH / NEW YORK," included with a poorly-fitting 19th century stoneware lid, not original to the jar. Smith jar is paired with a highly-ovoid, handled jar with brushed floral decoration, stamped "HUMISTON & WARNER / SOUTH AMBOY," NJ origin. Smith jar with a thin 2 1/2" crack from rim, small rim chips, a minor 3/4" surface line to edge of rim, a thin 5 1/2" vertical crack from base, a large horizontal X-shaped hairline to reverse, and some staining. Lid with two edge chips. Humiston & Warner with in-the-firing spalling to cobalt, rim chips, wear to interior of rim, and some water glass staining. H (of Humiston & Warner jar) 9".
