Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Hawk-on-Mound Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a hawk or eagle with raised wings, alighting a mound with shrubs. The Norton hawk or eagle design is rare in its own right; the composition of the scene, involving a mound below the hawk, is highly unusual. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Restoration to left of hawk, area below hawk, and to left side of jar, which adjoins a restored crack on underside. This restored damaged includes an unrestored crack extending through the mound. Tiny chips to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. A 1" glazed-over flake to reverse. An additional small in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. H 12".
