Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a chicken pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground with shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Restoration to much of crock's surface, involving the chicken's legs and part of the ground cover, but not the rest of the bird. Restoration includes paint to left handle, the extent of the restoration there being unknown. Hairlines to front. A small Y-shaped hairline below right handle. H 11 1/2".
