Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "TROY, N.Y. / POTTERY.," NY State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed birds with crests, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable motif and unusual maker's mark. Includes salt-glazed stoneware lid. Jar with chips to inner rim for lid, a minor rim chip on reverse, a minor chip and short line to one handle, and an in-the-firing surface line to interior rim area, not visible on exterior. Lid with chips, a hairline, and exfoliation to its edge and underside. H (of jar) 13 3/4".
