Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "CLARK & FOX / ATHENS. NY," circa 1835, highly-ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with striped body. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Cobalt highlight to lower handle terminal. Figural decoration of any kind is rare by this potting firm. In-the-firing flaws , including an in-the-firing iron ping and salt residue to reverse, a small in-the-firing stone ping to bird decoration, and a glazed-over 7/8" dent to shoulder. Additionally, a shallow flake to top of spout and small base chip. H 16 1/2".
