Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Two-Sided Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "SAM'L I. IRVINE / NEWVILLE, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a thickly slip-trailed design of a grape cluster hanging from a leafy stem. Impressed with Samuel Irvine mark on front and reverse. This crock is the first example of Irvine stoneware that we have seen featuring a grapes decoration. Scattered exfoliation throughout. A 5" diagonal crack from rim. Wear to interior of rim. One rim chip. A large, glazed-over dent to reverse. H 9 1/8".
