Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "S. HART & SON / FULTON," NY State origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird perched on scrolled stem or banner with spotted interior. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid, probably not original to the churn. Some bubbling to cobalt. Some light staining. Spider lines on underside, not visible on interior. A 2 1/4" Y-shaped line under right handle, not visible on interior. A 2 1/2" vertical surface line below decoration. Shallow chips and wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with a few small chips and edge wear. H (of churn, excluding lid) 17 1/4".
