Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK JR / ATHENS NY," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with spotted wing, perched on a stump flanked by grasses. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Very nice condition. Small areas of wear to interior of rim. Shallow chipping to inner rim for lid. Water glass staining to interior. Two minor chips to shoulder molding. Shallow chips and a short line to one handle. Minor wear to edge of opposite handle. H 12".
