Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Edgefield District, SC, possibly Dave, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled rim and applied lug handles, the surface covered in a streaky, olive-green alkaline glaze. Incised with three punctates and two slash marks at the shoulder, both traits of the enslaved African-American potter, Dave. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Large area of restoration to rim on reverse. A 1 1/2" shallow chip to one handle. A restored 1 1/2" hole to side of jar, larger and poorly restored on interior. Traces of old red paint to handles. Significant surface flakes to interior. H 13".
