Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "1/2 Gal Beer," Dated 1840, attributed to Smith & Day, Norwalk, CT, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with the slip-trailed date, 1840, underscored by a stylized floral motif and a looping line. Incised "1/2 Gal Beer" at shoulder. The first example of Norwalk stoneware that we have seen inscribed in this manner, giving no doubt as to what this jug was made to hold.
