Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "1/2 Gal Beer," Dated 1840, attributed to Smith & Day, Norwalk, CT, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with the slip-trailed date, 1840, underscored by a stylized floral motif and a looping line. Incised "1/2 Gal Beer" at shoulder. The first example of Norwalk stoneware that we have seen inscribed in this manner, giving no doubt as to what this jug was made to hold. The reasoning behind the inscription, 1/2, as opposed to 2 for two gallons, is unknown. Missing handle. Two large spout chips. Base area of jug broken and restored. H 13".
