Stoneware Canning Jar with Cobalt Shield Decoration, Stenciled "J. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO. PA.," circa 1875, tapered jar with "wax sealer" rim, decorated with a stenciled shield featuring the maker's name, "J. HAMILTON," within a banner, flanked by two daisies. Provenance: From a fifty-year private collection. A chip to interior of rim and some minor nicks to inner wax sealer rim. Two base chips. A 3 1/2" hairline on underside, extending approximately 3" up reverse of jar. Some minor wear to surface. Some wear to stenciling and "HA" in "HAMILTON" is faint. H 9 1/2".
