Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "C.L. WILLIAMS / & CO. / NEW GENEVA. / PA.," circa 1890, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring C.L. Williams maker's stenciling surrounded by stenciled flourishes. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Cobalt-script "5" flanked by five dashes on each side at base. A 4" faint diagonal hairline from rim on front. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a fifty-year private collection. Heavy chipping to one handle. A 2 3/8" hairline from rim above opposite handle, as well as a tiny nick and light wear to this handle. A minor rim chip on reverse. Some light staining. H 15 1/2".
