Fine Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Rose Motif, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES.," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a central stenciled design of crossed roses, surrounded by Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling. Undulating freehand vine motif to shoulder. Freehand stripe decoration below rim and at base. Base with bold-faced stenciled "4" flanked by curved dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a fifty-year private collection. Areas of old red paint to interior. Small traces of old red paint to exterior. A 2 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior. A 1 1/2" line along edge of one handle. Spots of staining to surface. A tiny nick to one handle. H 14 3/4".
