Scarce Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Bridgeport, PA Advertising, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1885, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles and semi-rounded rim, decorated with freehand straight and wavy stripes to the shoulder and base. Midsection stenciled, "ARMSTRONG'S STANDARD / STORE. / DEALER IN / FINE GROCERIES & / FARM IMPLEMENTS. / BRIDGEPORT. PA.." Cobalt-script "3" below, flanked by flourishes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Incised "X" on underside. Provenance: From a fifty-year private collection. Excellent condition with very minor chipping to shoulder molding, staining throughout, as well as traces of old paint (unrelated to any restoration) on rim and underside. H 14".
