Scarce Celadon-Glazed Stoneware Butter Crock with Lid, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical form with footed base, squared rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a series of brushed cobalt swags against a grayish-blue celadon-type glaze. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark at shoulder. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes a salt-glazed stoneware lid with similar swag decoration, impressed with John Bell maker's mark on underside. Crock and lid in excellent, essentially as-made condition. H (of crock excluding lid) 6 1/8" ; Diam. (of crock) 9 1/4" ; Diam. (of lid) 9 1/2".
