Extremely Rare Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Water Cooler, Stamped "BENNINGTON / FACTORY," Captain John Norton, Bennington, VT, early 19th century, large-sized, ovoid form with tooled rim, applied lug handles, and circular bunghole, decorated with a large brushed "6" flanked by swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and maker's mark. One of a very few coolers known featuring the rare and highly-prized "BENNINGTON FACTORY" stamp, used during the early years of stoneware production by the Norton family. A 4" hairline from rim to right of maker's mark. Significant tight spider cracks throughout. Minor rim chips. A 7/8" hairline to rim on reverse. A few small in-the-firing pings to surface. H 16 1/2".
