Very Rare Glazed Redware Jug, Stamped "L. JOHNSON," Lorenzo Johnson, Newstead, Erie County, NY, circa 1850-1886, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder, the surface covered in a cream-colored, lead-based glaze. Shoulder impressed with Lorenzo Johnson maker's mark. Johnson is among the most well-known producers of redware in New York State and his best work ranks among the finest from the state. Few signed examples of his pottery are known. Significant restoration to spout, with paint and/or restoration extending over much of handle. Large area of restoration to base on front. H 11 1/2".
