Outstanding Four-Gallon Middletown, VT Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Fort Edward, NY origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a stump, surrounded at the base by ground cover. Impressed at the shoulder with the merchant advertising, "M E VAIL & SON / Middletow, Vt." Cobalt highlights to advertising and capacity mark. A finely-decorated example of New York State stoneware with unusual advertising for the Vermont market. A salt glob to shoulder on front and side. Some mottling and a few, in-the-firing unglazed spots to surface.
