Very Rare Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "N.J. LLOYD / BEAVER, PA," circa 1860, semi-0void jar with squared rim, applied lug handles, and tooling to midsection and shoulder, decorated with a three-stemmed, vertical fuchsia motif above a horizontal fuchsia vine. Brushed cobalt band to midsection and freehand "8" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Decoration is applied over slip-coated clay. Few examples of stoneware bearing the mark of Beaver, Pennsylvania potter, Nehemiah J. Lloyd, have survived and relatively little is known about his operation. This jar, appealing in both decoration and size, is the first signed example of his work that we have ever offered. Very nice condition with a thin 5 1/2" crack from rim on reverse, a bloated spot to shoulder on front, a small in-the-firing ping to front, and some light water glass staining to surface. H 18 7/8".
