Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Spotted Tulip Decoration, Stamped "E. FOWLER / BEAVER, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an undulating vine bearing unusual tulip blossoms with flared petals and spotted borders, applied over slip-coated clay. Brushed "5" below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A large Y-shaped crack on underside, forming a second Y-shaped crack to base area on front. A 4 1/2" Y-shaped line to reverse. A shallow 1 1/4" chip to right handle and some wear to ends of same handle. Some minor wear to left handle and surface of jar. H 13 7/8".
