Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "E S FOX----ATHENS," NY State origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tall collar and applied lug handles, decorated with an abstract brushed foliate motif related to earlier designs by Athens and Poughkeepsie, NY potter, William Nichols. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few in-the-firing burns to rim, a glazed-over iron ping to collar, and some minor water glass residue to interior.
