Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Stamped "J.B. CAIRE & CO / POKEEPSIE," NY State origin, circa 1842-1843, approximately two-gallon ovoid pitcher with squat-shaped body and finely-ribbed handle, decorated with two brushed leaves below the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of John B. Caire and Company. A difficult-to-find form from this city. Essentially as-made condition. A 7/8" in-the-firing base chip. Other in-the-firing flaws, including two minor separations to upper handle terminal, some in-the-firing contact marks to surface, a salt drip near base and on underside, a shallow 3/4" chip to underside, and a 1 3/4" in-the-firing surface fissure to underside, not visible on interior. H 11 1/2".
