Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "BOYERS & HARDEN / PALATINE / W VA," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a dramatic undulating vine design above Boyers & Harden maker's stenciling. Stylized stenciled foliate motifs to midsection. Base with freehand "6" flanked by wavy lines. Freehand stripe to shoulder and base. Among the finest Boyers & Harden pieces that we have ever offered, featuring the pottery's prized vining. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Some faint surface lines, not visible on interior. Two minor chips to interior of rim, one of which occurred in the firing. A small chip and minor wear to right handle. Some faint traces of old dark paint. Minor staining. A network of thin cracks to underside, one of which continues 4" up base of crock on its left side. Exfoliation to underside. H 14 1/2".
