Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO, / PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled maker's mark, "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY, / GREENSBORO, PA." Stenciled shining star at midsection. Stenciled roses to shoulder and additional stenciled flowers flanking the abbreviation, "PA." Freehand straight and wavy stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Large stenciled "5" at base, flanked by stenciled foliate motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 6 1/2" crack from rim on side of jar. Light wear to surface, including stenciling. Light staining. A 1 1/2" shallow flake to underside of rim on front. Two cracks from rim on front, measuring 8 3/4" and 3 3/4". A minor chip and minor ping to left handle.
