Scarce Slip-Decorated Redware Loaf Dish, Inscribed "Lafayette", Norwalk, CT origin, second quarter 19th century, with coggled edge, the interior decorated with yellow-slip inscription, "Lafayette", flanked by scrolled lines. While a dated example of related Norwalk redware places at least many of these dishes at the middle of the nineteenth century, this one may date to the time of Lafayette's famous 1824-1825 return visit to America. A wonderful example of Americana, made to commemorate one of the great heroes of the Revolution. Some flakes to right side of interior. Wear to rim. A few small rim chips. L 12 7/8" ; H 9 1/4".
