Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware, Stenciled "HAMILTON / & / JONES, / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated at the midsection with Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling flanked by stenciled roses. Further decorated above with freehand stripes and vining, as well as below with a "5" flanked dashes, underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A long, thin crack from rim on front, measuring approximately 13 1/2". A 2 1/2" thin crack from rim on side of jar. A 6" crack from rim on reverse. Small chips to shoulder molding. Some staining to surface. A minor, in-the-firing rim chip, which is glazed over. A tight spider line to right side of jar. A minor line and chip at base on right side of jar. In-the-firing flakes to underside at edge, created when the jar adhered to another object during the firing.
