Four-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed flowering plant motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes loosely-fitting salt-glazed lid with cobalt banding and Albany slip highlight. Jar with a 5" crack from rim with tiny nick out of surface, a thin 5" in-the-firing crack on underside, extending 3 1/4" up base of jar on far right side of jar's front, and a minor in-the-firing ping to front. Lid with chips to flange on underside, a short crack from edge, and a minor nick to knob.
