Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN YOUNG & CO. / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1856-1858, cylindrical jug with footed base and semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flowering plant bearing two large, three-petaled blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and lower handle terminal. This jug features exceptional, enamel-like application of the cobalt and outstanding color to the decoration and jug. Excellent condition with only in-the-firing flaws, including a small in-the-firing chip to underside at edge, a minor glazed-over chip to interior of spout, and a minor, in-the-firing contact mark to top of handle.
