Very Rare Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.B. LEATHERS / MT. EAGLE, PA," circa 1875, approximately one-and-a-half-gallon bowl with rounded sides and flattened rim, decorated on the front with a large brushed tulip below the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of John B. Leathers. An additional, doubly-impressed J.B. Leathers maker's mark appears to the left of this stamp. A rare and desirable stoneware form and highly-prized Central Pennsylvania maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in PA. Two rim chips on reverse, measuring 2 5/8" and 1 5/8". A 7 1/4" hairline on underside, extending approximately 2 1/4" up left side of bowl's front. A very shallow, 1 1/4" rim chip on side of bowl, which occurred in the firing and is glazed over. Other minor rim wear. A 3 1/2" vertical firing crack from interior of rim on reverse, not visible on exterior. H 6 1/4" ; Diam. 12 3/8".
