Very Rare Stoneware Handled Spittoon with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.B. LEATHERS / MT. EAGLE, PA," circa 1875, with footed base. concave sides, and applied lug handles, decorated with brushed cobalt foliate designs on the front and back, as well as underneath the handles. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor's father in the 1950s or 1960s. Fork-shaped crack in underside, a section of which extends up reverse of spittoon to rim. An additional crack running from rim to hole in top surface. Chip to opening at shoulder. H 5" ; Diameter 10 1/4".
