Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. HUMISTON / SOUTH AMBOY", NJ origin, circa 1830, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a wavy stem bearing two flower buds. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of only two examples that we have ever offered bearing this maker's mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. Two short, vertical surface lines at base on right side of jar, not visible on interior. A short line on underside, continuing a very short distance up left side of jar at base. Minor base chips.
