Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Dated "1823", attributed to the Bissett Family, Old Bridge, NJ, 1823, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a hanging flower with veined leaves. Reverse decorated with the brushed cobalt date, "1823", including a flourish below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Garth's Auction, July 30-31, 2004, lot 335. A large, tight spider crack to reverse/side of jar. A large in-the-firing contact mark to reverse of jar. Rim is misshapen with an in-the-firing separation on interior of rim. Chipping around rim. An approximately 6" hairline from rim on reverse. Shallow base chips. Other small in-the-firing flaws.
