Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Huntington, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid-bodied pitcher with tall, flaring collar and tooled rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "WARD & CO. / GROCERS, / HUNTINGTON. / W. VA." Collar decorated with graduated diamond-form striping. Length of spout flanked on each side by a wavy vertical stripe. Horizontal cobalt highlight to lip of spout and upper handle terminal. Few advertising pitchers produced for West Virginia merchants are known. This example features a very stylish form, appealing use of freehand and stenciled decoration, and desirable advertising from the Cabell and Wayne County town of Huntington. Handle broken off in a single piece and reglued. A thin 3 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A 1" in-the-firing surface chip near base on reverse. A small chip to left edge of spout. Some rim and spout wear. Black marker inscription, "#27", on underside. H 10 1/4".
