Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird-and-Floral Decoration, Stamped "G. LENT / TROY," NY State origin, circa 1820, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a skillfully-incised design of a bird perched on the stem of a flowering plant. The design's distinctive, four-petaled flowers include dashes to the outer edge of the petals and hollowed lobes on the interior of the petals. A fine example of early incised work from New York State. Significant, but stable, exfoliation to reverse, extending around the sides of the jug. This damage has smoothed over the years, and appears to be very old. Discoloration to surface. Shallow chip and minor line in spout. A few small base chips.
