Four-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied open handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of leaves emanating from a curved stem. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. In-the-firing iron pings to surface. Small chips to exterior of rim on one side. Wear to interior of rim. Some very faint lines to one side of jar below handle.
