Rare Cold-Painted African-American Face Tile, Stamped "BOSTON / TERRA COTTA CO / 394 FEDERAL ST.", Boston, MA origin, circa 1880-1895, molded square slab, featuring a recessed relief decoration of a smiling African-American face. Interior with old black paint. Reverse impressed with the maker's mark of the Boston Terra Cotta Company. Literature: For a related example, see Karlson, American Art Tile, 1876-1941, p. 20. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term New England collection. Excellent condition with minor edge chips and expected, very minor paint wear. H 4 1/2" ; W 4 1/2".
