Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A. & W. BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA.", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with combed banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles; decorated with a finely-brushed looping vine bearing three flower blossoms. Unusual swag decoration to the interior of vine's loops. Brushed stripe decoration below rim and at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Front shoulder impressed with Alexander and William Boughner maker's mark. Significant restoration, including some painted touch-up to cobalt leaves on left side of design, as well as some touch-up to cobalt stripe below rim. An unrestored chip and shallow dent to one handle, and an unrestored chip to opposite handle.
