Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Grapevine Motif, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO / GREENSBORO. / PA.", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, the shoulder decorated with an intricate stenciled grapevine motif. Midsection decorated with a stenciled tulip surrounded by James Hamilton & Co. maker's stenciling. Base with stenciled "4" flanked by dashes and foliate devices. A 6 1/4" crack from rim on far right side of jar's front. Two thin cracks from rim on reverse, measuring 3" and 3 1/2". Some firing flaws and staining to surface. Heavy crazing to top of rim and interior, not visible on exterior.
