Outstanding Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Presentation Inkwell, Southern U.S. origin, Dated 1/30/1901, tapered form with tall neck, the surface covered in an olive-green alkaline glaze. Incised across the front with the presentation inscription, " J.F. Whetsel, / with / Compliments of / Fras F. Martin / 1/30/1901". A rare form in Southern manufacture, made truly remarkable by its inclusion of a large incised inscription. A significant recent discovery in Southern alkaline-glazed stoneware. Very nice condition with a shallow 3/4" chip to bottom edge, two minor chips to underside at edge, and some in-the-firing residue to underside. H 4 1/4".
