Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A difficult-to-find form for this classic Norton motif. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing ping to interior base.
