Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stenciled "RICE & BROYLES", Lindside, WV, circa 1875, small-sized, squat-shaped jug with tooled spout, featuring the arched stenciled signature, "RICE & BROYLES". Decorated at the shoulder with a brushed tulip motif on one side and a foliate motif on the other. An additional foliate decoration appears below the maker's stenciling. Spout decorated with a brushed cobalt highlight. Handle decorated with highlights to the terminals and a stripe to its midsection. A rare West Virginia maker, potted in a desirable size. A 1 1/2" base chip, probably in-the-firing. Other small base chips. H 8".
