Rare and Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Flower Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1885, large-sized, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with turned head, perched on a flowering plant. Excellent detail to bird's body and wing, in the form of stripes, spots, and dashed trails of cobalt slip. Slip-trailed "5" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Three small chips to interior of rim. A series of flakes to bottom edge on reverse. Some minor exfoliation near base on reverse. Minor exfoliation to underside. A few very minor base chips on front. Some light water glass staining to surface. H 12 3/8".
