Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.M. HICKERSON / STRASBURG, VA", circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a swag-and-hanging flower motif, the so-called "Indian necklace" design distinctive to Strasburg stoneware. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Several cobalt dashes below one handle. Impressed below opposite handle with J.M. Hickerson maker's mark. Crock is slightly misshapen. A 3/4" chip and 1 1/8" flake to interior of rim. A small chip to one handle. A long, tight horizontal line at base. Some staining. H 14 1/2".
