Rare Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J.S. PENLAND", Buncombe County, NC origin, late 19th century, distinctively-potted jar with tapered body, sharply-angled shoulder, flared collar, and arching lug handles; surface covered in a mottled brown alkaline glaze. Impressed "J.S. PENLAND", the maker's mark of Buncombe County, NC potter, Joseph Sylvester Penland, under one handle. Appealing form and scarce maker's mark from a member of the illustrious Penland family of potters. Surface wear to glaze. Otherwise excellent condition.
